Lyrics

Long long time ago
I can still remember what my life was like in '69
Whenever I would get the chance
I’d put on my bell-bottom pants
And stroll down Melrose Avenue in style.

The school year started in September
Now it’s June and I remember
Three long years of learning
Our pages all were turning

I still remember how we laughed
As we gathered all those autographs
Of classmates, faculty, and staff
That day in ‘69.

So bye, bye, Fairfax High
We had fun and now it’s done but still the memories survive
As girls and boys, we had the times of our lives
Thinkin’ 'bout the days at old Fairfax High
Thinkin' 'bout the days have gone by....

Did you trash my book of math?
I will sure incur Ms. Wunch’s wrath
Stegelmeier told me so
Now were you out diggin’ rock and roll
When you should be reading Edgar Poe?
Mister Mingo’s gonna zing you, this I know

Well I know that you’ve been cutting class
Cos you missed the Tijuana Brass
Herb Alpert came and played
When we were back in the tenth grade

I was a horny teenage Cavalier
Looking for a Delta to help me clear
My teen complexion from ear to ear
The days at Fairfax High

(We were singing)
Bye, bye, Fairfax High
Love the smell of Canter’s Deli and pastrami on rye
As girls and boys, we had the times of our lives
Thinkin’ 'bout the days at old Fairfax High
Thinkin' 'bout the days have gone by....

Now for two score we’ve been on our own
And I grew fat while you got stoned, but
It wasn’t really all that bad
Well my knees are stiff, and my back is sore
And I don’t get out much any more
And I can’t recall the last good sex I had

But I think I’ll still recall your names
Though the girls Botox and the guys Rogaine
Who sent this crap to me?
Oh, it’s from the Double - A - R - P

And back at Fairfax High we sucked at sports
With names like Berg, Levine and Schwartz
But we kicked ass on book reports
The days at Fairfax High

(We were singing)
Bye, bye, Fairfax High
Let’s go park at Farmers Market after dark you know why
As girls and boys, we had the times of our lives
Thinkin’ 'bout the days at old Fairfax High
Thinkin' 'bout the days have gone by....

Spector, Decca, Peppers, Elektra
Meet me at Nortie's or Aron Records
Forty-fives for eighty-eight...
Cents, at last we got our finals done
Now let’s get some vinyl spun
For a "Lovely Kind of Groove," I just can’t wait

Spent my summers at the Teen-age Fair
And we Aquarians Aged, and lost our "Hair"
Enter the Fifth Dimension
But you were still in detention

And then the FM dial had just begun
There was no 101.1
But we had "Fun, Fun, Fun" in the "Warmth of the Sun"
Way back in Fairfax High

(We were singing)
Bye, bye, Fairfax High
I’m a hippie, bet your bippy, Mr. Zippy got high
As girls and boys, we had the times of our lives
Thinkin' 'bout the days at old Fairfax High
Thinkin' 'bout the days have gone by....

I read the news today, oh boy
Some made me blue, some gave me joy
Seems the more things change, the more they stay the same
We sharpened our survival tools
Attending middle and high schools
And the teachers showed us how to play the game

Today it’s different, or it isn’t
The "Days of Future Passed" are present
Higher education
Talkin' 'bout My G-G-Generation

C - O, C - O, C - O - L - O....
N - I, N - I, N - I - A - L....
I think I hear that recess bell
From back at Fairfax High

So bye, bye, Fairfax High
We had fun and now it’s done but still the memories survive
As girls and boys, we had the times of our lives
Thinkin' 'bout the days at old Fairfax High
Thinkin' 'bout the days have gone by....

(Everybody)
Bye, bye, Fairfax High
We had fun and now it’s done but still the memories survive
As girls and boys, we had the times of our lives
Thinkin' 'bout the days at old Fairfax High

  1. Steve,

It was great when you sang it at the reunion, and even better here on the blog. Thank you so much, am looking for the next installation.

  2. I echo Judy's sentiments 100%!

The reunion was so much better than I had even anticipated, and this song was definitely the highlight of the evening.

It would be great if there was a common spot where all the people who took pix could upload and share them. That is my suggestion, because not everyone is on Facebook (although many are).

Hip, hip hooray to those who organized and attended the reunion... and to ALL of us from the class of '69!

  3. Steve.
Terrific job on the Fairfax High lyrics. Though I only know you from the JBB, I'm sure this went over very well at your reunion.
